About this deal

In a continued denial and washing of Scotland’s heavy involvement in the slave trade, the confrontation of Enough of Him is, in moments, upfronting with brutality – not in action, but in word and imagery. In these moments, such flickers of emotion communicate more than language, though Sumbwanyambe’s writing certainly doesn’t leave the latter to chance. But Orla O’Loughlin’s direction commands you look forward, even as we sense others in the room turn their hands in shock, disgust, and embarrassment. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. But, for Joseph, his future is tied up in the past — physical freedom is one thing, psychological freedom another.

It’s been a tough few years, especially when the launch of our publication occurred right at the start of the Pandemic. His colonial experiences in the Caribbean have so disturbed him that he has contracted Margaret never to mention Jamaica. The play explores the true story of Joseph Knight, an African man who famously freed himself through the Scottish courts in the late 18th century after being enslaved by a plantation owner in Scotland. We are delighted to be offering audiences a packed theatrical program in 2024 with thrilling new productions alongside acclaimed shows that we have brought back by popular demand," Artistic Director Jackie Wylie said in a statement. Looking through the court records of the Knight-Wedderburn case, for example, he came across a painfully familiar argument from those opposing Knight.

The trauma of slavery impacts everybody, not just the person who is being enslaved,” says Sumbwanyambe. And as the keeper of the house, Lady Wedderburn has reasons of her own to resent Knight’s relationship with her husband. Through the sharing of important stories, that tell us about ourselves, we explore our shared humanity. Within this household, Joseph Knight is saying, “Enough of him, because if I can’t get free of this situation, I’m never going to be a father, earn a wage and live a full life. But this removal of his supposed manhood is not played for humour, nor sympathy but acts as a masterful, perverse and sadistic account of Scotland’s history with slavery.

But the walls of Ballindean do not keep secrets — their affair unsettles Lady Wedderburn, whose bitter loneliness is only deepened by the close bond her husband has with Knight.Once again, the new Studio performance space at Pitlochry provides the ideal setting with the backdrop of a huge picture frame also doubling as a canvas for atmospheric lighting by Emma Jones. Composer John Pfumojena’s music draws upon the sounds of African percussion, most notably in a memorable arrangement of the famous Scottish folk song, The Parting Glass.
