About this deal

Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity to nicotine or any of the excipients. Use by non-smokers. Patch and gum: use by occasional smokers. Patch: diseases of the skin.

Most of the side effects which are reported by patients occur generally during the first 3-4 weeks after initiation of therapy. Low (2 mg gum) or high (4 mg gum) dose forms are acceptable depending on patient characteristics and preference. Whenever you feel the urge to smoke coming on, distract yourself by keeping active. Don’t feel sorry for yourself. Get up and do something. Do that job around the house or garden that you’ve been putting off or take up a hobby. In overdose, symptoms corresponding to heavy smoking may be seen, however the toxicity of nicotine cannot be directly compared with that of smoking, because tobacco smoke contains additional toxic substances (e.g. carbon monoxide and tar). Nicotine is excreted in breast milk. Nicotine replacement therapy should therefore be avoided during breast-feeding. Should smoking withdrawal not be achieved, oral forms of nicotine replacement therapy gum may be considered as intermittent dose forms would minimize the amount of nicotine in breast milk and permit feeding when levels were at their lowest. Nicotinell gums can cause adverse reactions similar to those associated with nicotine administered by other means (including smoking) These can be attributed to the pharmacological effects of nicotine, which are dose dependant. Non dose-dependent adverse reactions are as follows:

NRT products can be used to relieve withdrawal symptoms and reduce the cravings for nicotine that you get when you try to stop smoking, or when you are cutting down the number of cigarettes you smoke while trying to stop smoking. More severe poisoning leads to arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation, coma, convulsions and respiratory and cardiac arrest. Recovery is likely if survival exceeds 2-3 hours. Some drugs may have Authority Required (Streamlined) status which does not require an explicit approval from Medicare, instead the doctor can use the Authority code found in the published Schedule for a given drug/indication. Should be used with caution in patients with moderate to severe hepatic impairment and/or severe renal impairment as the clearance of nicotine or its metabolites may be decreased with the potential for increased adverse effects. Your are more likely to quit smoking when using this product with help from your pharmacist, doctor, a trained counsellor or a support programme. The above recommendation can be used for adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years of age. As data are limited in this age group, medical advice should be obtained should it be found necessary to use the gum beyond 12 weeks. The use of NRT in adolescents should only be used when the benefits of abstinence outweigh the risks of continued smoking. Nicotine gum should preferably be used in conjunction with a behavioural support programme as this normally improves the success rate. A single brief convulsion does not require treatment. Otherwise control with IV diazepam or lorazepam. If unresponsive seek advice from NPIS/NPIC or appropriate specialist

By giving you control over your nicotine cravings, you can effectively deal with your withdrawal symptoms as they happen. If an adverse event is noted when high dose forms are initiated, this should be replaced by the lower dosage form. If you have not cut down the number of cigarettes you smoke each day after 6 weeks, see your doctor or pharmacist. It is indicated to aid smokers wishing to quit or reduce prior to quitting as well as to assist smokers who are unwilling or unable to smoke, and as a safer alternative to smoking for smokers and those around them.Giving up is more difficult for some people than others. If you fail to stop first time, don’t be disheartened. Try again at a later date – you can do it!

Even small quantities of nicotine are dangerous in children, and may result in severe symptoms of poisoning which may prove fatal. If poisoning is suspected in a child, a doctor must be consulted immediately. Nicotinell Gum 2mg is particularly useful for light smokers who are more likely to experience less severe withdrawal symptoms, and for those who have previously failed to stop smoking with nicotine replacement therapy. If you smoke 20 or more cigarettes a day, we recommend the 4mg gum. If you smoke less than 20 cigarettes a day, try the 2mg gum. We suggest you use the gum for three months, chewing up to 10 of the extra strength 4mg gums or 20 of the regular strength 2mg gums per day as and when you experience cravings. At the end of your 3-month program, reduce the amount of gum you use each day until you phase it out altogether. At recommended doses Nicotinell gum has not been found to cause any serious adverse effects. Excessive consumption of Nicotinell gum by those who have not been in the habit of inhaling tobacco smoke could possibly lead to nausea, faintness or headaches. Do not chew more than 1 piece of gum at a time and do not use more than 25 pieces of 2mg gum a day.

How do iI use the combination of nicotine (Suggestion only: Remove nicotine and replace with Nicotinell) patch + gum or lozenge? Gum base, calcium carbonate, sorbitol (E420), Sodium Carbonate, Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate, Glycerol, Star Anise Oil, Liquorice Extract, Levomenthol, Eucalyptus Oil, Butylhydroxytoluene, Saccharin, Saccharin Sodium, Acesulfame Potassium, Xylitoll, Mannitol (E421), Gleatin, Titanium Dioxide (E171), Carnauba Wax, Talc and Water. Maintain a clear airway/ensure adequate ventilation. Monitor pulse and BP. Perform 12 lead ECG and measure QRS duration and QT interval and repeat especially if the patient is symptomatic or has taken slow release preparations Overdose with Nicotinell gum may only occur if many pieces are chewed simultaneously. Nicotine toxicity after ingestion will most likely be minimized as a result of early nausea and vomiting that occur following excessive nicotine exposure. Risk of poisoning by swallowing the gum is small. Since the release of nicotine from the gum is slow, very little nicotine is absorbed from the stomach and intestine, and if any is, it will be inactivated in the liver.
